Launching the Cleaning Campaign in Sana’a and Aden
2018-2019
In 2018, UNOPS in partnership with the Local Cleaning Funds in Sana’a and Aden launched two cleaning campaign targeting the eight districts in each city. As of 30 November 2018, about 33,000 m3 of accumulated waste has been collected in Sana’a out of 130,000 m3 of total target quantity. In Aden, the cleaning campaign started in December 2018, by collected and disposed 100,000 m3 of accumulated wastes out of actual needs of 905,000m3 that need to be collected and disposed safely in Aden city.
Since 2015, all urban areas in Yemen have suffered greatly from the lack of public services due to the ongoing conflict. Solid waste management is one these services that has deteriorated the most because of the partial collapse of local Cleaning Funds. As a result, this has caused accumulation of solid wastes on the streets and within the local neighborhoods of these urban areas.
The project targets more than 380,000 beneficiaries under this sector with includes labor intensive sub-projects such as stone paving, green spaces, water drainage , and local sanitation in addition to SWM sub-projects . The Cleaning Campaign is one of the planned component (Tertiary Municipal Service and Solid Waste Management -TMS & SWM) under Yemen Integrated Urban Services Emergency Project. Moreover, UNOPS is directly implementing the Solid Waste Management subprojects including waste collection campaigns, to complement the capacity of the local Cleaning Fund in Sana’a, Aden and Hodeida by collecting and disposing accumulated waste. This is done by hiring local contractor(s) in accordance to agreed schedules, quantities and locations and disposing these collected wastes into a predefined site at the city landfill.
The Yemen Integrated Urban Services Emergency Project funded by a grant from IDA, the World Bank fund for the world’s poorest countries, and implemented by UNOPS. The three- year project aims to support 1.4 million Yemenis: 600,000 Yemenis with access to rehabilitated water and sanitation services, rehabilitate 400 kilometers of urban roads, restore 60,000 megawatt hours of energy generation, and create 1.5 million days of skilled and non-skilled employment – around half of them women – and will include 19 cities from across the country.
