Completion of Phase I of solar energy projects in the Governorate of Abyan, District of Zinjibar – UNOPS

The United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) has implemented the installation and commissioning of three solar energy projects in the Governorate of Abyan, District of Zinjibar, in three schools as a first phase out of 9 projects in total. As well, the implementation of Phase II was initiated with the supply and installation of integrated solar energy systems in six schools. With support of the World Bank Group’s International Development Association (IDA).

 

This activity takes place concomitantly with the implementation of many similar projects in the governorates of the Republic within the activities of the Yemen Emergency Electricity Access Project, implemented by UNOPS to finance the off-grid solar energy systems, inclusive of health and educational facilities and a number of wells in rural and peri-urban areas.

 

The US$ 50 million Yemen Emergency Electricity Access Project aims to improve accessibility to electricity in rural and peri-urban areas of the Republic of Yemen. The project also includes a number of sub-projects, most notably the restoration of electricity supply to 1,200 vital service facilities and the provision of electricity supply to 200,000 households in all governorates of the Republic.
